Being a Christian Can Be Exhausting

lordsgymI’m tired. I woke up at 3:30 this morning and didn’t fall back asleep. This happens with some frequency so I’ve made it a habit to keep a book nearby so I can read for a bit. Occasionally, after reading a bit, I’ll fall back to sleep and get a few more hours of needed rest. That was not the case this morning. So, I moved on and read a blog. It is titled “I’m Tired of Being a Christian” Check it out at http://kelseymunger.com/2015/09/14/im-tired-of-being-a-christian/

I hadn’t read Kelsey’s blog prior to the early hours of this morning, but I’m grateful I was up in the wee hours of the day to come across it. She’s on a journey. She’s thinking through Jesus, faith, the church and Christian subculture. And, she has some pretty decent humor about the awesome Christian apparel worn in youth groups. (*note the Lord’s Gym t-shirt art with this post). More importantly, she’s wrestling with some great questions. And, couldn’t we use some great questions?

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Then, as a whole, how did we make Christianity so tiring and the quest to appear righteous so exhausting. Why is that? Where did we come up with some of our rules, practices, traditions and subcultural norms? Which were manufactured by humanity and which were directed by God? Do we know the difference?

Read Kelsey’s post (again here). How does it resonate with you? What can you appreciate about her thoughts and questions? Where do you see yourself in her writing?

*The Lord’s Gym picture is an homage to early 90s youth groups everywhere. Before Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and even way back before MySpace t-shirts like this were worn because social media didn’t exist taut one’s Christian allegiance.
